Exhibition Curatorial Walkthrough (Art Tour)


The California African American Museum presents a bilingual tour of “The African Diaspora in the Art of Miguel Covarrubias: Driven By Color, Shaped By Cultures.” The exhibit will be ongoing at CAAM through February 26, 2012. Covarrubias was known for his caricatures depicting African Americans in the Harlem Renaissance era. His work also depicted Afro-Mexicans, Afro-Cubans and West and North Africans. Miguel Covarrubias migrated to the United States from Mexico at the age of 19; his early caricature art was featured in magazines like, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Vogue and many more. This exhibition is free and open to the public.
